🐪 Racing Beyond Limits: My Experience at the Maralal Camel Derby 10KM Race

Introduction: A Race Like No Other

Every race has its story, and the Maralal Camel Derby is one you never forget.
Held in the rugged beauty of Samburu County, this annual event is more than just a competition. It’s a festival of culture, colour, and community, where athletes, locals, and travellers from around the world gather to celebrate endurance and adventure in the heart of northern Kenya.

This year, I had the privilege to participate in the 10-kilometre running race, and what an experience it was!

The Spirit of the Camel Derby

The Maralal Camel Derby has been held every year since the early 1990s, attracting participants for camel races, bike races, and foot races.
The air in Maralal buzzes with excitement as the town transforms into a vibrant hub of movement camels bellowing, cyclists gearing up, and runners warming under the rising sun.

From the moment I arrived, I could feel the energy.
Locals adorned in traditional Samburu attire, tourists from across the globe, and athletes from all walks of life came together to test their limits and share in Kenya’s cultural heartbeat.

Running the 10KM Race: Pushing Through the Heat

On race day, the atmosphere was electric.
The 10KM course stretched across the semi-arid plains a breathtaking yet demanding terrain that challenged both strength and spirit.

The sun was fierce, the dust rose with every stride, and the rhythm of cheering crowds echoed through the dry winds. But despite the heat and the uneven ground, I felt deeply connected to the land and the people around me.

After weeks of training and mental preparation, I crossed the finish line in the top five, clocking 36 minutes, a moment that reminded me why I love endurance running.
It wasn’t just about the position; it was about resilience, focus, and the joy of pushing beyond what I thought possible.

🗣️ “Every finish line is a new beginning is a reminder that the human spirit can always go further.” — Martha Wangui

For athletes like me, races such as the Camel Derby are more than just competitions they are opportunities to connect with Kenya’s heartland, embrace its diversity, and celebrate the unity that sports create. Every year, this event brings people together, professionals and amateurs, young and old, all driven by passion, determination, and the thrill of the race. It’s a reminder that sports aren’t just about winning; they’re about community, culture, and courage.

Looking Ahead

Crossing that finish line in 36 minutes was more than a personal victory, it was a symbol of growth, perseverance, and the power of consistency.
Events like the Maralal Camel Derby continue to inspire me to train harder, dream bigger, and represent the endurance spirit of Kenyan athletes wherever I go. If you’ve never experienced the Camel Derby in Maralal, put it on your list.
It’s not just a race, it’s a celebration of life, resilience, and heritage.
And for me, it’s proof that whether you’re running, cycling, or riding a camel, the real victory lies in showing up, doing your best, and sharing the journey.
